The extremely picturesque Chopta Tungnath Chandrashila is most popular weekend trek among the trekking enthusiast, and can be ventured out to throughout the year.

The trek will take you to the highest temple (Tungnath) of Lord Shiva.

The trek opens the abundant treasure of nature, the soothing climate, mountain birds, dense forests with maple, trees of Oak and rhododendron, and the magnificent views of peaks like Trishul, Chaukhamba and Nanda Devi.

Chandrashilla, at an altitude of 4000 Mtrs, is the highest point of the mountain on which Chopta and Tungnath lie. Chandrashilla offers 270-degree views of the Himalayan range and lies 1.5 km further upwards from Tungnath Temple which makes it a 5 km trek from Chopta.

The altitude of Tungnath Temple is 3,680 Mtrs or 11,220 Feet and that of Chopta is 2600 Mtrs or 7,925 Feet. Chandrashilla Peak is further ahead at an altitude of 4,000 Mtrs or 12,192 Feet.

During winters the trek completely is snowy.

Itineraries

Day 1

Reach Guptkashi

Reach Guptkashi by your own transport arrangements. Check-in Kedar Resorts.
Evening bonfire followed by Dinner. Night stay at Kedar Resorts, Guptkashi.

Day 2

Guptkashi - Chopta - Tungnath - Chandrashila - Guptkashi

Start Time: 4:30 AM (Can be started after breakfast also)
Packed Breakfast and Lunch is provided. Our tour escort accompanies you.
Road Distance: Chopta – Guptkashi: 42 kms | Duration: 2 hours.
Trek: 10 kms (5 kms up & 5 kms down) |

This trek starts from Chopta in morning, only to get the mesmerizing views of the Himalayas on reaching Chandrashila.
During the trek the fantastic Himalayan birds, the awe-inspiring vista of the Garhwal, the gigantic pine, maple and oak trees in the surrounding areas and of course, the deep, pervasive silence of the mountains is enough to take your breath away.
Chopta – Tungnath trek distance – 3.5 km | Tungnath – Chandrashila trek distance 1.5 km
Later trek down to Chopta, and drive to Guptkashi.
Night stay at Kedar Resorts in Guptkashi.

Day 3

Checkout

After breakfast, check-out for your onward journey.

  • Non AC Accommodation on twin / triple sharing basis at Resort.
  • All Veg meals on fix menu basis (From Dinner on Day 1 to B/F on Day 3). Packed meal for trekking route.
  • Entry Fee & Forest Department's permit for trekking route.
  • Porter cum guide services ONLY to carry meals on trekking route.
  • B/F and Lunch on Day 1.
  • Lunch and Dinner on Day 3.
  • Any snacks, mineral water, medicines, charges.
  • Any tips, priest charges, pooja charges, extra porter services, extra tour guide services.

Though, the trek is accessible through out the year; If you wish to see the vegetation flourishing in the mountains with colors of nature, visit Chandrashila during spring and summer seasons. However, if you wish to see the snow-clad mountains, winter is the perfect season for Chandrashila trek.

Woollen clothing – including thermal pants and shirts, a pair of woollen gloves, woollen and sun caps, 3 pairs of woollen socks, a woollen scarf, thick jackets, etc.
At least 5 litres of bottled water and instant food like cookies and cakes.
Necessary toiletries like hand sanitizers, towels, napkins, etc.
Extra bio-degradable bags
Sunglasses and lip balms.
Waterproof rucksack and rain cover for rucksack.
Medical kit, including any prescribed medicines
Torch with fresh batteries
Identity proof
Raincoat or windcheater
Relevant trekking and camping gear like trekking shoes, trekking backpack, trekking poles, etc.

Carry minimum weight as you will be responsible for your own baggage.
Do not use plastic, or in case you do, keep it with you for disposal at a facility.
The temple is sacred, do not mark it or spoil it in any way.
Consuming liquor and smoking is not allowed for the journey.
The decision of the trek leader will be final and binding.
Delays may occur due to weather conditions
Any person with health conditions like Asthma etc is advised not to go for this expedition. However, if they so decide, it is at their own risk.
Ensure the safety of your own baggage.
The temperature varies from a minimum -3 degrees to a maximum of 15 degrees during the day. Please pack accordingly.
Carry all your garbage back with you, and dispose at prescribed places only in dustbins.

Limited Mobile network is available for Airtel, Idea, Vodafone, Jio and BSNL numbers at Chopta. However, on trekking route at most of the places, there may not be connectivity, so finish your calls at Chopta and inform your family about limited phone connectivity. BSNL is the best operator in the area.
